I had Isaac and William come up to me with a problem. Isaac said “The math we do is too easy for me Mr Hattie”. William agreed with Isaac. I decided ‘well, if it hard you want then hard math you will get!’. So, I wrote a fraction on the board - ¾ - and both William and Isaac said “I know that one Mr Hattie.” I simply replied “What is that as a percentage and decimal?”. They both looked stumped. I said “use the site Khan Academy and see if you can teach each other how to solve this, do you have the Capabilities?”. They both went away and in 15 minutes they were back with huge smiles on their faces. “We did it!” and sure enough they had.
William and Isaac used their Capabilities and Collaboration to teach themselves how to convert fractions to decimals and percentages. They showed the Key Competency of Managing Self and Thinking.
